Batman is the secret identity of Bruce Wayne,an American billionaire, playboy,industrialist and philanthropist. Having witnessed the murder of his parents as a child,he took an oath to fight crime. Unlike other superheros, he does not posses any super powers. Wayne trains himself both physically and intellectually and creates a bat-themed costume. He uses his will,fear,intellect,martial arts skills,detective skills,wealth,science and technology in his continuous war against crime.
Why Bats ?
When Bruce was a child,he was scared of bats. Little Wayne along with his parents had been to a theater, his fear for bats made them to leave the theater early and later in an alley outside the theater his parents were shot down by a robber. He feels responsible for their death. So, he used the source of fear to inspire a fear-mongering costume to terrify his foe.
This is what he says to Alfred when he asks "Why bats, Master Wayne ?"..
"Bats frighten me. Its time they share my dread."
Batsuit And Utility Belt
The suit named "Nomex Survival Suit" was derived by Lucius Fox's R&D program, within the Applied Science division of the Wayne Enterprises. Initially was designed for advanced military use, but it was considered too expensive. The first layer of protection is an undersuit with built-in temperature regulators. The second layer of protection consists of armor coated with a black latex material. It can withstand slashing weapons and deflect any bullet short of a straight shot impact. There are metal gauntlets with scallops on the forearms of the suit, mainly used to block against knives or any stabbing weapons.
Batman's cape is made up of "Memory Cloth" which is very flexible. It becomes semi-rigid when an electric current is passed through it. The right glove consists of a microcircuit for this purpose. This is what helps the Batman to glide. Batsuit also has a "Sonar-Vision", where signal emitted by mobile phones are converted into images.
Batman's utility belt contents are not exactly known because he changes it to suit his needs. It usually consist of the batrang,grapple gun,a simple coiled rope,flash and smoke explosives.

Tumbler : A tank-like prototype vehicle designed as a bridging vehicle for military by the Applied Science department of the Wayne enterprises. It includes weaponry and its armor is strong enough to break through concrete barriers.
"Does it come in black."
Bat : A light weight aircraft designed by Lucius Fox. Originally designed for Urban military operation, but becomes Batman's new primary vehicle.
"And yes Mr.Wayne, it does come in black."
